Alpana Bawa
254-1249
70 E 1st St between First and Second Ave. Subway: F to Second Ave.
Wed–Sun noon–7pm.
Alpana Bawa's creations, made of ultra-bright, gauzy silks and delicate hand-woven cottons bought on thrice-yearly trips to India, are truly unmatched. After spending five years in a small storefront on 1st Street, Bawa relocated her studio to Grand Street in Soho. But her more casual designs, including her perennially popular T-back mini-dresses, are now being sold in the original East Village shop, along with discounted items from previous seasons. "The top price [on new items] is $150," says Andrea Aimy, store manager. "Whatever doesn't get sold eventually goes down to $15." Sale items recently included a kelly-green cotton-organza sleeveless top from last summer (originally $150, now $30), a pink-and-brown-striped cotton-and-silk organza dress from two seasons ago (originally $250, now $50) and orange-and-yellow cotton-organza miniskirts from a summer or two ago (originally $125, now $30). There are also sturdier articles with lower price tags, such as wraparound cotton miniskirts ($20) and square pillowcases made of block-printed cotton ($15). By the end of August, the 1st Street store will carry the entire summer lines from both locations. And since Bawa follows few trends that aren't of her own making, buying something from last season still places you light-years ahead of the fashion pack.

They offer exactly 30% cash, or 55% store credit, of the very price tag that we put on your items for sale. Since this is not a consignment shop, you will receive your cash or credit voucher on the spot. We will evaluate the items while you wait, or you may drop them off for your convenience.

We realize that we're not letting any secret out here, but in all our travels there is no other store that compares as a bargain hunter's dream for designer wear. Savings of up to 75% are the norm on everything from La Perla lingerie to couture Gaultier gowns to Robert Clergerie pumps. Sometimes it's survival of the fittest, with all the clawing and pawing going on amidst the racks, but if you're true to your game, you can score big.

The tiny space, which opened in 1991 and is still marked by a neon-pink sign, was converted a few months ago into an outlet that sells only items at wholesale. Keller calls it "a permanent sample sale." You can find designs that never made it into the collection and items from years past: A shopping cart's filled with green tartan plaid pants for $30, and there's also "basic stuff, like boot-leg pants—a design she's famous for," Keller points out. Currently, the East Village store's treasures include stacks of boot-cut pants in tan, red and white (originally $130, here $60), striped sharkskin hipsters ($30), a selection of sample tan Ultrasuede camisoles ($30) and one-of-a-kind articles, such as a dramatic asymmetrical black-lace-and-polyester dress ($50). As the fall season approaches, more and more of the warm-weather collection will be finding its way eastward.

As seen in Best of New York by New York Magazine: "Sometimes, getting a bargain means getting grimey. That's where Duty Free Apparel comes in. Located up a flight of stairs on a grungy garment district block, this 2,000-square-foot shop is bursting with current-season bags from Prada, Fendi, Ferragamo, Dolce & Gabbana, Tod's, Gucci and Burberry, all 20 to 50 percent off retail. Merchandise varies weekly; the company goes on buying trips to Italy every six to eight weeks and returns with the goods, which often hit his sales floor before Madison Avenue. Shop as you would at a sample sale - grab what catches your eye, then edit as you go. Catfights are not uncommon." New merchandise arrives daily.

Domseys Warehouse Outlet

431 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn 718-384-6000 Most seasoned garment hunters know the difference between vintage clothes and used clothes. A vintage shop will sell a great shirt from a bygone era for the same price (or more) as the shirts on the sale rack at Barneys. A basic thrift store will sell the same shirt for chump change. Hello? Do vintage buffs realize that the clothes are used? That someone probably slept in it, splashed it with condiments, or used it to nurse a pug back from the brink of death? Domseys Warehouse, a 35,000-square-foot behemoth, understands that vintage means something different for clothes than for wine. Somewhere in the sea of 350,000 garments there is a slick blue Starsky and Hutch leather jacket or a shimmering green blazer. The multilingual staff is especially friendly (which is more than can be said for some of the Manhattan shops) and will happily lead the savvy shopper on the spree of his or her dreams.

Mon–Sat noon–8pm, Sun noon–7pm.
Few fans know that Fisher started her business in a narrow East Village storefront, which today serves not only as a retail space but also as the only city repository for her samples and damaged items. This sisal-floored nook also carries a small selection of new stock, but there's always at least one (and sometimes up to four) large cabinets stocked with damaged or imperfect goods or samples. Damaged items (flaws range from missing buttons to makeup stains) are reduced by 25 percent. Current-season samples are initially sold at 25 percent off; subsequent markdowns match those on retail clothing.

Gabay’s
212-254-3180
225 First Ave., between 13th and 14th Sts.
"There's a store on 1st Avenue between 13th and 14th that is a Mecca for discount designer goodies. It's called Gabay's, 212.254.3180, and it's sort of a mini-Century 21 – not pretty and it takes a big of digging, but there are some serious gems. I've gotten Berdorf Goodman cashmere sweaters for $80 bucks, a pair of Manolos for under $200, and a Marc Jacobs bag for $300ish. Pretty amazing. You've gotta have an eye, but any fashionista worth her shoe collection should know about this place."
Are you wandering the aisles at Bergdorf's, wishing it could all be yours? Well now it can (for about 75 percent less). This East Village shop gets most of its merch from the midtown department store's surplus, so you can be sure to find deals on fashion-hound faves like Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs, and Chanel. The occassional Blahnik or Choo will pop up, but be sure to join the mailing list for weekly shipment alerts, so you can be there at opening time to snag them.

Ganas

There’s a commune on Staten Island (they call it an "intentional community)". It’s called Ganas, and the six members who started it in 1979 still live there, along with 84 others.
Back to shopping: Ganas members run three thrift and vintage stores called Every Thing Goes, one for clothing, one for furniture, one for everything else. Sometimes the stuff rocks, sometimes not so much. But the prices are always low – really low.

Suit up in Armani, Brioni or Zegna. The gently worn top-shelf suits look good as new, and prices start at around $125, with Donna Karan, Hugo Boss and Calvin Klein getups going for a bit more (about $325). Here, a splurge means paying a mere $550 for a $2,800 Prada number.

Hell's Kitchen Flea Market
West 39th Street, between Ninth and Tenth Avenues. Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
"Nice top. Is that Banana?"
Yeah, we know the feeling. We'd all love to cultivate a distinctive, one-of-a-kind style. But shopping outside the mainstream can be a little scary for first-timers.
A good place to start: the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market. Fresh off its debut season, the diverse post is full of original goods, on-pavement fashion shows, and a free shuttle bus to Chelsea's Annex market. Every Saturday and Sunday vendors of all types flank the sides of a closed-off city block by Port Authority, hawking everything from vintage clothing to antique toasters. Our favorite is the Special Flavas pocketed bandana-print undergarments, but you're sure to find something that suits your taste no matter what your personal style.
So you can finally start to make that much-needed transition from Banana top to top banana.

laredoute.com
If you haven't heard of laredoute.com, take a moment and go to this site immediately. I read about it, went there, and have been positively amazed at how much cool stuff there is on this site. My assistant Asheley and I have been on it for an hour (hey, this is our JOB, ok!) trying to figure out what to buy. Her choice is this mini-dress by Vanessa Bruno, a total steal at $49.99. My choice is (what else?) the Alexandra Neel two-tone leather heels for $74.99. There's also a Viktor + Rolf velvet tuxedo — the jacket is under $100. I don't know how they do it, and I don't care. This is a total find.

So I was ecstatic to receive an email from Showroom Seven- the folks who produce some of the big fashion shows- introducing their outlet store, Outlet 7. Samurai – Best 99 cent store in NYC
718-278-1433
31-08 Steinway Street, at 31st Avenue
Samurai is the coolest 99-cent store I’ve ever seen. I can’t quite explain the name, although you might have to be warriorlike by Manhattan standards to get to its Astoria location. But resist the temptation to take a cab (you’ll need it for the return trip to haul all your booty) and take the G, R, or V train to Steinway. At first, Samurai seems like any other 99-cent store—overwhelmingly underwhelming. The temptation is to run for the door. Don’t. The stuff here is incredibly eclectic, albeit sometimes so kitschy you’ll burst out laughing. The first aisle is office products: citrus-colored notebooks and staples in fuchsia, navy, green, and gold. Next, kids’ stuff, including Hello Kitty and a similar brand called Ham-Ster. There are tons of beauty items (with an impressive selection of false eyelashes) and tabletop goods (from ceramic rice bowls to mod mugs). My favorite steal: a small canvas tote in yellow or red. The most expensive object? A large covered ceramic pot for $4.99—slightly more than your round-trip subway ride but, on a cost-per-use basis, practically free.

Shazzam
East 5th Street
At the shop, a quintessential bohemian hole-in-the-wall that's been around for decades, Shazzam specializes in spectacularly cheap clothes—samples, odd and ends, and end-of-season merchandise the owner garners from a variety of venues, many of which are drying up. Shazzam used to sell everything for $5, except for the stuff in the window, which went for $1 an item. Now the clothes are two for $5, and merchandise piled on the floor are $1. "We made it two for $5 on October 1, 2001 to make up for the 50 percent of business we lost." Tourists and uptowners may have stopped coming to the neighborhood, but the locals are loyal. On a recent autumn afternoon, a lively crowd was fairly squealing as it poured over racks and riffled piles. A young woman clutching a striped halter handed over her dollar and exclaimed, "What a steal! I feel like I'm robbing you."

Spence Chapin Thrift Shop
1473 3rd Avenue (at 83rd street)
Check out their July a bag sale. This is the deal...buy any bag ($50), and you can 'stuff it' with whatever you can. I suppose if you can fit a coat in there it's yours! Not a bad deal. Also, their current windows are full of fall merchandise...specifically shearling coats and jackets. Though the best one, a man's toggle coat that is very 'Michael Kors' inspired ( it looks small enough to fit a woman) won't be priced or available until after Labor Day. There is a chocolate brown long coat which is marked at $400, but is currently 30% off.

Steven Alan Outlet Store
982-2881
330 E 11th St btwn. First and Second Aves. Subway: 6 to Astor Pl. 1–8pm.
Just over a year ago, Alan made another bold move, opening an outlet on 11th Street, where markdowns start at 50 percent off the original price. Although there are a number of $10, $20 and $30 bins that contain a mishmash of shmattes from past seasons (such as a $20 pair of Daryl K sharkskin pants that looked very similar to the $30 ones at the 6th Street outlet), the real reasons to visit are the items still hanging neatly from the racks. Two weeks ago, there was a sleeveless tan Tocca dress with a pretty mandarin collar ($107) and matching purse ($90) and a bevy of hot-pink-and-burnt-orange Tocca skirts for $65. Although there is never such a thing as slim pickings here, there are optimal days to visit: "[On Fridays,] we bring over new things for the weekend," explains employee Carol Cardenas. The end of the week has never looked better.?*

Tokoio 7
64 East 7th Street

Tokio 7 owner Makoto Watanabe, an ex– Asahi-beer executive in a hand-painted Bruce Lee sweatshirt, knows his labels. Outside his small East Village consignment shop, there’s a freshly magic-markered sign listing his catches of the day: Diane von Furstenberg dress, $60. Alice + Olivia pants, $75. Gucci shirt, $50. This is not the place to find Linda Wachner–ish board-meeting suits or the tailored tweeds and sober shifts that populate the racks of the Upper East Side consignment district (though Watanabe will allow that Chanel “can be funky sometimes”). Tokio 7’s labels are more Kate Hudson chick-flick: Tocca, Theory, Tracy Feith, K-189, Chaiken, and Diesel. Silvery Sigerson Morrison kitten heels ($50) rub up against pumps by Prada and Miu Miu. And there’s plenty made in Japan besides the tree of $20 plastic Kewpie dolls: Issey, Yohji, and Commes des Garçons. “Kawaii!” a Japanese teenager squeals, trying on a pair of green Louboutin elf boots in front of the no food no drink no dog allowed sign. Cute.
